With the fast growing demand for Ayurveda therapies such as Panchakarma, Shreyas Yoga Retreat India is soon inaugurating a brand new Indian spa that will offer authentic Pancha karma therapy in addition to the existing Ayurveda treatments.

In Ayurveda there are pancha vidha Shodana Karmas, purifying therapies that are mentioned by Ayurveda acharyas to eliminate vitiated dosha from the body with the help of Ayurveda internal herbal medications through different routes. These shodhana karmas are widely called “pancha karmas”.

The pancha karmas are Vamana, Virechana, Anuvasana Basti, Asthapana Basti & Nasya.

Among these pancha shodana karmas “Basti” recognized as a very effective therapeutic procedure. In fact its even called it as “king of treatments” by some Ayurveda acharyas in their scriptures because of its unique effects & benefits.

What Is Basti Karma ?

The word “Basti” means “Bladder” or “Bag”. In olden day’s urinary bladder of the animals (after a proper sterilization procedures) were used to administer this treatment. Hence this therapeutic procedure called as Basti”.

Basti karma is administration of medicated decoctions or oils through the anal region & can be given for cleansing, purification, nourishment, regulation of the internal organ functioning, which are involved digestion, or other metabolic functions & to improve longevity.

Depending on the purpose or ailment, combination of medicines & other ingredients are decided by Ayurveda acharya’s.

Basti is classified in 2 types based on the ingredients that are used in the preparations.

  1. Anuvasana Basti
  2. Asthapana Basti

Asthapana Basti:

This is an enema treatment in which herbal decoction is used to detoxify vitiated vata dosha & aid balance.

Anuvasana Basti:

Here medicated oil is used as main ingredient to administer enema. While taking kashaya (decoction) basti, body tends to become dry. Hence, alternatively thaila (oil) enema is given. This also rejuvenates & strengthens the body.

Based on number of sessions, basti karma is classified into 3 types-

  1. Yoga Basti (8 Sessions)
  2. Karma Basti (16 Sessions)
  3. Kala Basti (30 Sessions)

Based on actions, its classified into 9 types-

  1. Snehana- lubricating 
  2. Lekhana- scrapping 
  3. Shodhana- cleansing 
  4. Brumhana- nourishing 
  5. Utkleshana- aggravating 
  6. Pitchil- slimy 
  7. Sangrahi- obstructing 
  8. Shukrakruta- increasing reproductive tissue 
  9. Krumighna- eradicating worms

Some other Types of Basti:

i) Uttara Basti – the vaginal douche, given with medicinal decoctions for various gynecological conditions, such as uterine prolapse, leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, urinary obstruction, habitual abortions, infertility, etc.

ii) Mutrashaya Basti – Here medicated fluids are introduced through the urethra (male). This treatment is extremely effective in certain semen disorders, painful urination & some bladder issues.

Benefits & indications of Basti karma:

Basti karma is very effective in major vata vyadi such as hemiplegia, paraplegia, sciatica, spondylitis, constipation, tremors, osteoarthritis, and obesity.

Contra indications for Basti Karma:

Basti Karma is contraindicated for conditions like anaemia, jaundice, piles, fever, diarrhea, poisoning, emaciation, enlargement of the spleen &liver. It is also not recommended while fasting.

Complications of Basti:

Basti karma is an effective therapeutic procedure to cure many ailments when it’s done under guidance & supervision of professionals. Proper care & precautions need to followed or else it can lead to complications such as spasmodic pains, burning sensation, anorectal itching and pain, anorexia, blockage of stools & flatulence. When given in excess it may also lead to complications such as anorectal inflammation and ulceration, fissure, weakness and muscular cramps etc.
