As I stepped onto the property upon arrival at 3:30 a.m., there awaiting to greet me were the warmest smiles. A gentleman appeared and gently placed fresh garlands around my neck, another handed me a welcome drink served on a tray while taking my bags, and yet another handed me a hot eucalyptus-scented towel to refresh me from my long journey in. Ah….what a relief! When they bowed and greeted me with a “Namaste” I knew I had come to the right place. I not only felt like a princess with this orchestrated service – I felt right at home – at last!

The next morning, I awoke by my senses being stimulated with soft sunshine, dozens of birds chirping and the soft breeze caressing the coconut palms. I arose with a smile on my face. When my eyes opened, revealing the plush décor of my room, the princess feeling returned – such luxury! I made a vow that each day I would take the time to smell the hundreds of fresh rose petals next to my bed. I couldn’t ask for more!

…Oh, but then came the dining! It was presented like everything else - with class and high regard. “Nothing overlooked, nothing understated”. I was in awe and felt so fortunate to be there. The food was delicious and the staff and guests were just as nice – so meal times were a delight. Sometimes, by candlelight, other times an array of fresh rose petals on the table, or spread in the gardens under the stars by a warm toasty fire. I have never experienced such pampering. I have been to the Ritz Carlton – but this was the “Ritz Carlton” of yoga retreats! But even more, this was personalized service for a small group – so your every like and dislike was known and attended to in the most unobtrusive professional manner.

After a day of yoga, swimming and lounging in the gardens, I would end my day by curling up with a shawl and a fresh cup of herbal tea – fresh from the garden, and watch a movie. The theatre was another inviting place to contemplate my day. I could watch something yogic, a Bollywood movie, listen to a documentary of the Dalai Lama, or watch an American film – the choice was yours just like the menu of teas. You don’t even lift a finger for the converter; there is a gentleman to take care of all that. The service is impeccable!

As the days passed I knew the departure would be sad – leaving the amazing cooks who so kindly gave me a cooking demo in Indian cuisine. I would rather have left with them than the recipes. They even baked me a cake for my birthday!

I made sure I left with some treats: organic honey from the garden, fresh turmeric and some star fruit jam – a small reminder at home of the paradise I had visited.

Oh, I have photographed it all, but the imprint is on my heart….of the neighbouring school kids smiles as they welcomed me with a standing salute “Good afternoon madam!” they shouted. Their smiles said it all – no English required.

Today, back at home, not a day goes by that I don’t think of the peace and serene calm of this place and how fortunate I feel for experiencing this gift. I continue my vow back here in Toronto…to take the time to smell the roses…as you are in touch with the divine in this simple gesture, it nourishes your soul and my memories of Shreyas come flooding back. Just like a rose – it is all round excellence!

I can’t wait to return – what a blessing!
